Hot Tub Electrical Requirements

Although some hot tubs can be plugged into a 120V outlet, the majority of hot tubs require a hard-wired 240V electrical connection. A qualified electrician should be used for the installation of the electrical line to ensure the safety of the hot tub occupants.

Generally speaking, most modern hot tubs require a 240V connection with 40-60 Amp dedicated circuit. Wiring required to the tub is usually 6 or 8-gauge three wire 240v cable which contains two hots, one neutral and a ground wire.

This wire must then be connected to its own dedicated GFCI breaker. An electrical permit needs to be pulled for the electrical connection of the hot tub.
